a zoom talk by Elizabeth Crofts
The Yoga Vasistha is a profound and uplifting teaching that describes how to attain liberation from involvement in matter and thus to access higher consciousness. It dates from possibly as early as the 6th century as a written text, or even earlier as an oral tradition. It tells the story in which the young prince Rama is instructed by the sage Vasistha to help him to overcome the struggles and misery he is facing on his path through life.
It is attributed to the sage Valmiki, one of whose disciples was granted a boon by Brahma, the creator god, after narrating the story of the YV. He requested as his boon that “All human beings may be freed from unhappiness,” and he begged Brahma to find the best way to achieve this. Brahma’s reply was this:
“Your story of Rama should be the raft with which men will cross the ocean of samsara.” This is referring to repetitive history, otherwise known as karma. In other words, it tells how to be freed from karma and contains practical advice on how to achieve this.
